AI is changing creativity

AI has made the first version of almost anything cheap. A logo direction, a headline set, a campaign photo, a landing page layout. The cost of producing something that looks finished has dropped close to zero.

Branding work was never slow because production was slow. What decides now is an artefact most teams never kept: a scoring sheet, a rejection log, a record of why option three lost to option seven.

Speed is not the same as direction

Volume did not make the choosing easier. It made it slower.

Forty logo directions can arrive in an afternoon. Getting from forty to two took a week of meetings, and the thing that did the narrowing was a set of tests agreed before anything was generated: read it at favicon size, print it in one color, embroider it on a cap.

Where the tools actually earn time

The gains are real, but they sit in specific places.

Naming rounds, alternate taglines, and quick mockups of a mark on a shopfront all move faster. So does the unglamorous middle of a project: resizing a key visual for every placement, drafting alt text, tidying a handoff file.

What does not move faster is the approval chain. Legal review, a client signoff, and the wait while a printer pulls a proof still take the time they always took.

Keep the judgment calls with people

Research interviews need somebody in the room noticing the pause before an answer. A type scale needs a person deciding that the step between headline and subhead does the wrong job on a phone. Models can write endless variations of a voice line, and the test that settles it is reading one aloud and hearing whether a support agent could say it without wincing.

Sameness is the quiet cost

These tools are trained on what already exists.

So the default output sits near the middle of everything it has seen, and the middle is where brands disappear. Ask for a modern wordmark and back comes a geometric sans, round and even, the same face the category already wears.

Defending the alternative is the expensive part. A condensed grotesque with flat terminals survived two rounds only because one person kept setting it beside the competitor set until the difference stopped being arguable.

Practice writing the rejection reason

Take a generated option and write one sentence saying what is wrong with it. Not weak, not off brand, but the actual fault: the counters close up at small sizes, the photography implies a budget the client does not have. That sentence is the whole skill, and it gets faster with practice. Teams that keep those sentences build a brief no model can hand them.

The strongest approach is to combine technology with human thinking. Use AI to explore ideas, accelerate workflows, analyze information, and create new possibilities while keeping strategy.
